SUVs: An American Standard

A few decades ago, the Sport Utility Vehicle was a relatively new concept. Vehicles like the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee were considered trendy and unique. In today's society, the SUV has become the staple of the automobile market. Everyone from soccer moms to college students have come to appreciate and demand both the sport and the utility of these vehicle models.

At their inception, most models were simply light truck frames with modified 4-door bodies. As the market shifted to the mainstream, so did the technology and design invested by automakers. Now, SUVs are some of the most comfortable, safe, and attractive vehicles on the road. Not to mention the advanced all weather, all-conditions capability most SUVs offer as standard. The most noted drawback to owning an SUV is the poor fuel economy. Large SUVs in particular can be very thirsty for gas, with some models averaging a mere 12 mpg. To many, this is a small price to pay for the versatility they offer.
